Korpulinski Crowned King of Riga as Piskolty Completes a Career Breakthrough

Round 5 of the 2026 Drift Masters season will be remembered as the weekend Pawel Korpulinski turned the pressure of leading the championship into the biggest statement of his campaign.

Ten years of Drift Masters in Riga brought another packed Bikernieki crowd, a circuit gaining grip by the battle and a bracket filled with major upsets, milestone results and drama that continued until the final runs of the weekend.

At the centre of it all was Korpulinski. Fifth in Qualifying. Victories over Daniels Baumanis, Nasser Alharbali, Lauri Heinonen, Piotr Wiecek and Kevin Piskolty. A 104-point weekend, the second Drift Masters victory of his career and a place as only the fifth different driver to win in Riga.

Mixed weather through practice and Qualifying had limited the rubber laid onto the circuit, but battle day began dry and Bikernieki changed quickly. Grip increased as the Top 32 progressed, leaving several drivers facing a very different opening initiation from the one they had prepared for.

The effect was clearest through the blind first section. Cars that had moved freely across the surface one day earlier suddenly bit into the track, pulling drivers away from the expected line and forcing chase cars to react at more than 120 km/h. On a layout already defined by speed, walls and commitment, every passing battle increased the pressure.

Top qualifier Piotr Wiecek began with a controlled victory over Simen Olsen, while Conor Shanahan advanced after mechanical trouble left Yves Meyer out of competition. Korpulinski faced a much closer opening test as home driver Daniels Baumanis pushed the championship leader hard before the judges sent Pawel through.

The first major upset arrived when Finland winner Jack Shanahan met Duane McKeever. An uncharacteristic error pulled Shanahan away from Outside Zone 1 during his lead. Jack responded with an aggressive chase, but McKeever's cleaner overall battle was enough to eliminate the Round 4 winner.

Marco Zakouril's promising fight with James Deane ended when fuel pressure dropped to zero, while the remaining Latvian hopes were also removed from the bracket. Lauri Heinonen looked more confident than at any point this season as he defeated Dave Egan, and Siim Oskar Haal delivered the wildcard result of the round by eliminating Dawid Sposob on his Drift Masters debut.

One of the longest battles came between Benediktas Cirba and Juha Rintanen. Their first exchange went to a One More Time before contact damaged Cirba's front alignment. Rintanen was judged at fault, Cirba's crew repaired the car and the Lithuanian returned to complete a marathon route into the Top 16.

Wiecek survived contact with Teemu Asunmaa to keep his pursuit of a sixth Riga victory alive, while Cirba advanced past Itay Sadeh. Heinonen and Deane then produced one of the closest battles of the round, forcing a One More Time before the Finn moved into the Great 8. Korpulinski completed the first half of the bracket by defeating Nasser Alharbali.

The upsets continued on the opposite side. Oliver Randalu eliminated Conor Shanahan, removing the second qualifier and another leading championship contender. Piskolty defeated Jakub Przygonski, Falvey advanced after a mistake from McKeever brought their battle to an early end, and Haal extended his outstanding debut by eliminating Jarkko Jylha.

The Great 8 reduced the bracket to four drivers carrying four very different stories. Wiecek ended Cirba's resilient afternoon and remained on course to add a sixth Riga victory to his record. Korpulinski defeated Heinonen to protect the championship lead, while Piskolty overcame Randalu to reach the first Final 4 of his Drift Masters career.

Falvey completed the line-up by ending Haal's remarkable debut run in the Great 8. After qualifying third and arriving at the Great 8 as the final Irish driver still in competition, he had secured another opportunity to build on the breakthrough podium he earned at Mondello Park earlier in the season.

The first semifinal carried history on both sides. Wiecek had topped Qualifying in Riga for the sixth time and was chasing a sixth event victory at Bikernieki. Korpulinski was fighting to protect the championship lead, but had never defeated Wiecek in competition.

That changed in Riga. Korpulinski delivered under the greatest pressure of his weekend and the judges sent him into the Final, marking the first time in his career that he had taken down Wiecek. The result ended Piotr's pursuit of another Riga crown and placed Pawel one battle away from his second victory of the season.

The second semifinal delivered a different kind of milestone. Contact between Piskolty and Falvey forced another major decision, with Falvey judged at fault. Piskolty advanced to his first Drift Masters Final, guaranteeing the first podium of his career after starting the weekend seventh in Qualifying.

The third-place playoff matched Falvey against Wiecek, but it ended with one of the heaviest Drift Masters impacts of recent seasons. 

Wiecek ran wide during his lead and hit the wall at high speed, bringing the battle to an immediate stop. The scale of the accident created a frightening moment for everyone at the circuit, but the most important news came quickly: Piotr was okay.

The result secured third for Falvey. After finishing third in Qualifying, he completed the weekend third on the podium, earning his first Riga podium and the second Drift Masters podium of his career.

The Final brought together the championship leader and a driver experiencing the biggest moment of his Drift Masters career. Piskolty had already secured a first Final and podium. Korpulinski had already defeated the most successful Riga driver of his generation. One last decision would determine who became the fifth different winner in the event's history.

Korpulinski completed the job. Across the final exchanges, he maintained the control and commitment that had carried him through every stage of the bracket, and the judges awarded the victory to the championship leader.

It was the second Drift Masters win of Korpulinski's career, arriving only one round after Jack Shanahan made it four different winners from the opening four events. This time, Pawel became the first repeat winner of 2026 and strengthened his position at the front of the title fight.

Piskolty's defeat in the Final did nothing to reduce the scale of his achievement. Seventh in Qualifying, victories over Mika Keski-Korpi, Jakub Przygonski, Oliver Randalu and Conor Falvey, then second place in Riga. His first Final, his first podium and the clearest sign yet that he can fight at the very front of Drift Masters.

Korpulinski leaves Riga on 382 points, 52 clear of Wiecek on 330. James Deane remains third on 298, with Conor Shanahan fourth on 274 and Jack Shanahan fifth on 244. Falvey's 82-point weekend moves him to sixth on 239.

The 104-point weekend gives Korpulinski the strongest championship advantage of the season with two rounds remaining. Wiecek's fourth-place result keeps him firmly in the fight, while Piskolty and Falvey leave Latvia with career milestones that could reshape the closing stages of their seasons.

Ten years of Drift Masters in Riga produced another new winner, another first-time finalist and a reminder that Bikernieki never allows the championship to follow a predictable path.

In the Nations Championship, Poland scored a round-leading 176 points through Korpulinski and Wiecek to close the gap to Ireland. Ireland remains first on 776, with Poland now only 48 points behind on 728.
