Round 2 of the 2026 Drift Masters season wasted no time turning up the pressure, as Qualifying Day at Circuito de Madrid Jarama - RACE delivered one of the most punishing sessions of the year so far.

Chaos Right From The Start
Under the Spanish heat and across one of the fastest, most demanding layouts on the calendar, drivers and cars alike were pushed right to the edge. Engine failures, tyre fires, heavy offs, and desperate last-minute repairs all became part of the story, while at the very top, James Deane made the chaos around him look almost effortless.

Jarama Bites Early
The drama began long before the first qualifying run was even completed.
Championship leader Conor Shanahan suffered a major setback during the opening practice session of the day, when an alternator belt failure created the perfect storm and ultimately led to a full engine failure. With only a matter of hours before Qualifying began, the Shanahan camp was thrown into a race against time to rebuild the engine and get the car back out on track.
They were not the only ones feeling the force of Jarama. The combination of heat, high speeds, and relentless commitment required across the layout took a serious toll on the grid. Tyre fires broke out during the day, mechanical gremlins appeared throughout the paddock, and a string of offs in the first half of Qualifying showed just how small the margin for error had become.
This was not a session that allowed drivers to ease their way in.

Deane Delivers a Masterclass
While many around him were fighting to simply survive the session, James Deane stepped up and delivered the run of the day on his very first attempt.
A clinical, pass earned the Irishman a huge 97-point score, immediately sending him clear at the top of the standings and setting a benchmark that nobody else could match. On a layout that punished even the smallest mistake, Deane’s run looked brutally on point from start to finish.
Behind him, Paweł Korpuliński put together a seriously impressive 96.2 point effort to secure second overall, while Mika Keski-Korpi capped off a strong afternoon with an incredible 95-point run to complete the Top 3.

Pressure Across the Grid
Beyond the fight for top spot, this was a qualifying session packed with stories.
Lauri Heinonen somehow managed to drag a score onto the board despite wrestling with an engine that was clearly far from healthy. Later in the session, he went even further, climbing into the 90s with the car still struggling beneath him.
Conor Shanahan’s turnaround was just as remarkable. After the scale of the engine failure earlier in the day, simply making it back out for Qualifying felt like an achievement. But the reigning champion went one better, putting down a respectable score on his very first run with a freshly rebuilt setup and keeping himself firmly in the fight for Sunday in the Top 10.
Elsewhere, Itay Sadeh’s weekend took a cruel turn as further mechanical trouble forced him out of competition, bringing an early end to his Round 2 challenge.

A Grid Full of Variety
Round 2 also brought one of the most visually diverse Drift Masters grids in recent memory.
Spanish wildcard Raman Kandratsenka stood out in his Mercedes-AMG GT, while Igor Derenko brought a RTR Mustang to the grid adding more American muscle than ever. Add in a wave of brand-new BMW G87 builds and plenty more unique machinery throughout the order, and Jarama’s qualifying session became as fascinating visually as it was intense competitively.
With wildcards pushing hard, fresh chassis making their mark, and established names under pressure from every direction, the Round 2 grid already feels like one of the most unpredictable of the season.

What Lies Ahead
Day 1 in Madrid is complete, but the real fight begins now.
After a qualifying session defined by survival, recovery, and outright commitment, the Top 32 is locked in for a massive battle day at Circuito de Madrid Jarama - RACE. If Saturday proved anything, it is that this layout can turn a weekend on its head in an instant.
Top 32 Battles go live tomorrow on Red Bull TV from 12:15PM CET here. Do not miss it.
