Wiecek Shines in Sunny Riga Qualifying

2 August 2024

We’ve witnessed excitement and surprises in Drift Masters many times before, but today's Qualifying session here at a sunny Round 4 in Riga, Latvia, might just be one of the most captivating days in Drift Masters history. As the dust settled, it was Piotr Wiecek from Poland who left the session with the biggest smile, having taken top spot in Qualifying with a near-perfect score of 97.5. But as always in Drift Masters, there's much more to today's story than just the final scores…

Finland's Lauri Heinonen, our current championship leader, was right on Wiecek’s heels with a score of 96.5, showcasing his consistent excellence. Rounding out the Top 5 were Ireland’s finest: James Deane with a score of 94, Duane McKeever with a 93, and Conor Falvey, also with a 93, just narrowly missing out on his first entry into the Qualiying Showdown. The competition was fierce, and it was only just day one.

With the Qualifying Showdown portion of the competition underway then, all eyes turned back to our top 4 finishers in the Qualifying session. The first Showdown battle featured a clash between Duane McKeever and Piotr Wiecek, which went to a One More Time decision after a fantastic battle.

Meanwhile, James Deane faced off against Lauri Heinonen in the other semi-final. A rare mistake and spin from Heinonen allowed Deane to advance, adding to the day's drama.

The rematch between Wiecek and McKeever in the One More Time battle was intense, but it ended in controversy. Wiecek was deemed at fault for causing damage to both cars during the battle after a very uncharacteristic sequence of events from both drivers, which allowed McKeever to win by default on a bye run. However, the victory came at a cost, as McKeever's car was not ready for the final battle, resulting in James Deane being awarded the win.
