Conor Shanahan Tops Ferropolis Qualifying as Championship Fight Tightens

A scorching afternoon gave way to an electric night at the City of Iron as Conor Shanahan delivered a near-perfect 98-point run to lead James Deane in an Irish one-two at Ferropolis.

The vivid sunset behind the industrial machinery transformed the venue as darkness arrived. Temperatures dropped, the grip changed considerably and teams were forced to keep adjusting their setups as Qualifying moved beneath the lights.

With only two rounds remaining in the 2026 Drift Masters season, the changing conditions were only part of the pressure. All four of Paweł Korpuliński's closest championship rivals finished inside the Top 4, tightening the fight before a sold-out battle day in Germany and the final journey to Warsaw.

Qualifying began following a difficult practice day that had already demonstrated how quickly Ferropolis could punish even the smallest mistake. Lauri Heinonen was forced to withdraw from Round 6 after fracturing his wrist in a crash on Thursday, adding another heartbreaking setback to a season already affected by four engine failures.

As the evening cooled, grip levels shifted and teams worked to adapt their cars between runs. The lights around Ferropolis took over, tyre smoke hung above the circuit and the roar of the cars echoed around the surrounding steel machinery.

Ferropolis felt busy without becoming overcrowded, creating a relaxed but energetic atmosphere around the circuit. Supporters had travelled from across Europe, with noticeable groups from the Czech Republic, Finland, Croatia, Poland and Germany bringing their own colours and voices to the grandstands.

Music filled the pauses between runs before being replaced by engines, tyre noise and cheers for drivers from across the globe. Marco Zakouril received some of the loudest support on his way to 18th, while the paddock remained positive as Qualifying avoided any major impacts.

Fifteen wildcards opened the 51-driver running order, giving the international crowd plenty to follow from the beginning. Mikolaj Zakrzewski made the strongest early impression with a 92.2-point opening run that eventually secured 17th overall.

Once the full-season contenders reached the track, the scores began to climb. Espen Rohde and Duane McKeever both recorded 94.7s, Oliver Randalu and Jakub Przygoński delivered matching 93.7s, and Jakub Król put a 93.0 on the board.

Conor Shanahan produced the first major benchmark of the night. His 96.0-point opening run placed him at the top of the order before Run 2 and gave the reigning champion the perfect platform from which to attack the circuit again.

Behind him, the title contenders had work to do. Piotr Więcek opened with a 92.5, James Deane sat on 91.7 and championship leader Korpuliński could manage only a 90.0.

Jack Shanahan faced an even greater challenge after making contact with the wall during his transition from Outside Zone 5. The resulting zero left him with one final opportunity to keep his weekend alive.

Clint van Oort produced one of the standout recoveries of Qualifying. After finding the wall on his opening attempt, his team repaired the car in time for him to return, score 86.0 and climb into 31st. The run received a warm response from the crowd and put the Dutchman into Saturday's main event.

Enver Haskasap claimed the final place in the Top 32 with an 85.0, leaving Dave Egan on the wrong side of the cut by only three tenths of a point. Egan's 84.7 placed him 33rd after he had carried a zero from his opening attempt.

As teams adapted to the cooler circuit, the leaderboard began to change rapidly. Three wildcards ultimately progressed, with Zakrzewski leading the group in 17th, Igor Derenko securing 23rd with a 90.0 and Dylan Garvey qualifying 25th with an 89.0.

There was heartbreak elsewhere. Max Heidrich failed to complete either attempt in front of his home crowd, while Benediktas Čirba suffered a suspected driveline problem on Run 1 and could score only 70.0 on his second attempt. His 44th-place finish ended his remaining mathematical hopes in the 2026 championship.

At the front, Nikolass Bertans jumped from 29th to fifth with a 95.0, while Diogo Correia climbed into eighth with a 94.7. McKeever secured sixth after producing two identical 94.7-point runs, with Rohde taking seventh and Correia eighth after their secondary scores separated the three drivers.

Jack Shanahan returned to the line with his weekend resting on one final attempt. Despite competing with an injured ankle and completing limited practice, he answered his opening zero with a 96.0 to move provisionally into first place.

His brother responded immediately. Conor improved from 96.0 to 98.0 with a run that connected the outside zones from start to finish and placed the reigning champion back at the top.

Deane then matched the 98.0 only moments later. He moved into second, but his opening 91.7 meant Shanahan retained P1 on the tiebreak. Two consecutive 98-point runs had raised the standard again just as the championship contenders reached their final opportunities.

Więcek followed with a 96.0 to take third ahead of Jack, whose opening zero decided their own tie. Korpuliński was the final driver on track and improved to 92.5, but the score placed him 16th and left him outside the eight Qualifying positions that award championship points.

Shanahan collected eight points for topping Qualifying, Deane added seven, Więcek took six and Jack Shanahan secured five. Korpuliński remains the championship leader, but his advantage over Więcek has been reduced from 52 to 46 points.

The tension around the championship leader was clear by the end of the session. Germany remains a major event in its own right, but the road to the Warsaw finale is beginning to sit beneath every result and every mistake.

Saturday's sold-out battle day has produced a bracket carrying major consequences from the opening heats. Jack Shanahan meets fellow Irish contender Conor Falvey, Deane faces van Oort and Więcek opens against Harry Kerr.

Korpuliński begins against highest-placed wildcard Zakrzewski. If the championship leader progresses, a potential Top 16 meeting with Conor Shanahan awaits, creating an early battle that could dramatically change the title fight before Warsaw.

Zakouril will have the Czech support behind him when he faces Jason Banet. With the championship contenders spread across a bracket filled with experienced names and dangerous wildcards, there is no straightforward route through Ferropolis.

The Top 32 gets underway live and exclusively on Red Bull TV from 14:45 local time on Saturday, before the Top 16 returns beneath the Ferropolis lights from 20:50. Qualifying set the order, but with the venue sold out and the championship pressure rising, the City of Iron is only getting started.
